Uptake of sympagic organic carbon by the Barents Sea benthos linked to sea ice seasonality

چکیده
On Arctic shelves, where primary production occurs in both the pelagic and sympagic (ice-associated) habitats, organic material (OM) can constitute a disproportionate fraction of benthic diets due to higher sinking rates lower grazing pressure than OM. Less documented is how OM assimilation across feeding guilds varies seasonally relation sea ice duation. We therefore investigated relative abundance vs Barents Sea shelf megabenthos summer winter 2018 2019, from 10 stations duration ranged 0 245 days per year. use highly branched isoprenoids, which are lipid biomarkers produced with distinct molecular structures by diatoms water column, determine ratio sympagic-to-pelagic assimilated organisms. From 114 samples 25 taxa analysed, we found that proportion 0.4% 95.8% correlated strongly (r 2 = 0.754) cover. The effect was more evident fauna collected during winter, indicating signals at latitudes. Our data show supply high carbon for benthos, although this variable likely dependent on availability patchiness deposition. These results comparable similar studies conducted benthos Pacific highlight importance seasonal zone inflow regions highest loss.

The Barents Sea
Fisheries in the North Atlantic, southeast Atlantic, and eastern central Atlantic reached their maximum production levels one or two decades ago and are now showing a declining trend in total catches (1). The declining catches are consistent with observations that these areas have the highest incidence of overexploited stocks, depleted stocks or slowly recovering stocks that have been depleted ...
متن کاملBarents Sea multidecadal variability
[1] We present area-averaged time series of temperature for the 100–150 m depth layer of the Barents Sea from 1900 through 2006. This record is dominated by multidecadal variability on the order of 4 C which is correlated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation Index. Citation: Levitus, S., G. Matishov, D. Seidov, and I. متن کاملOn the discrepancy between observed and CMIP5 multi-model simulated Barents Sea winter sea ice decline
This study aims to understand the relative roles of external forcing versus internal climate variability in causing the observed Barents Sea winter sea ice extent (SIE) decline since 1979. We identify major discrepancies in the spatial patterns of winter Northern Hemisphere sea ice concentration trends over the satellite period between observations and CMIP5 multi-model mean externally forced r...
متن کاملMODIS Sea Ice Thickness and Open Water-Sea Ice Charts over the Barents and Kara Seas for Development and Validation of Sea Ice Products from Microwave Sensor Data
We have developed algorithms and procedures for calculating daily sea ice thickness (SIT) and open water–sea ice (OWSI) charts, based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), ice surface temperature (IST) (night-time only), and reflectance (R) swath data, respectively. The resolution of the SIT chart is 1 km and that of the OWSI chart is 250 m. The charts are targeted to be...
